Plans were lodged today for an £80 million golf course - designed by the golden bear, Jack Nicklaus.

The 18-hole championship course is to be built on the Ury Estate on the outskirts of Stonehaven. Ninety homes could be built as part of the plan, which also incorporates the redevelopment of Ury Mansion House into a luxury hotel and clubhouse.  Developers FM Group say the scheme will generate £95m for the Scottish economy and create 200 jobs. Aberdeenshire Council will consider the proposals later in the year.

Jack Nicklaus said: “Aberdeenshire is a beautiful area and this site is particularly special. I have visited on a number of occasions and I think Ury Estate provides us all the components to create a memorable golf experience."  Nicklaus Design - a company with over 380 courses open for play in 36 countries across the globe - has another 45 courses at the design stage.

“I think this golf course can only enhance the storied golf heritage long associated with this beautiful country and the passionate Scottish golf fans. said the retired professional golfer. "We hope it can be a source of pride for the people in and around Stonehaven and the Aberdeen region."
